I hope my Week 9 picks are better than my abysmal Week 8… After the Panthers 29-26 overtime victory against the Colts, I ended the weekend with a record of 4-8-1. No worries, at the end of the season this past week will be seen as an outlier. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. All in all I learned a few things. The Raiders are for real, after disrespecting the Jets defense. Tampa Bay is rapidly improving after knocking off Atlanta on the road, and the Lions are laughable after embarrassing themselves against the Chiefs in London. I’ll alter my strategy this week and not rely on stats as much, going with my gut. Looking to flip the script against the spread this week.
Miami Dolphins @ Buffalo Bills (-3)
Tyrod Taylor is back and that will make all the difference for Buffalo’s offense. Ryan Tannehill will struggle. Bills win 20-10.
Washington Redskins @ New England Patriots (-14)
The Patriots are two touchdown favorites and I wouldn’t think twice before taking them to cover. Tom Brady can do no wrong. Patriots win big 42-17.
Jacksonville Jaguars @ New York Jets (-8)
Ryan Fitzpatrick will play this week after injuring his hand last week. If Geno Smith were at quarterback I would have to think harder about this one, but he’s not. Jets win 23-13.
Tennessee Titans @ New Orleans Saints (-8)
The Saints put up 52 points last week and Drew Brees threw for seven touchdowns in a 52-49 win over the Giants. The Titans get back Marcus Mariota after firing Ken Whisenhunt this week. It won’t help. Saints win 38-14.
Oakland Raiders @ Pittsburgh Steelers (-4.5)
This is a big matchup between these two squads with wild card implications in the crowded AFC playoff standings. Derek Carr has played lights out, but the game is at Heinz Field. Big Ben will regain form after a so-so outing against the Bengals. Steelers win 26-20.
St. Louis Rams @ Minnesota Vikings (-1.5)
Todd Gurley has been on fire and I do not see that stopping this week. The Rams will steal one from Adrian Peterson and the Vikings in Minnesota. Rams win 17-13.
Green Bay Packers @ Carolina Panthers (+2.5)
Aaron Rodgers threw for 77 yards last week against the vaunted Broncos defense. It won’t get any easier against Josh Norman and friends on the road against the Panthers. Cam Newton and Co. wins 23-20.
Atlanta Falcons @ San Francisco 49ers (+7)
The 49ers are awful, and Blaine Gabbert is now their quarterback. Yikes. This one will get ugly. Falcons win big 27-3.
New York Giants @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+2.5)
The Bucs stole one last week on the road against the Falcons, and looks better week to week. The Giants gave up 52 points last week against the Saints, but Jameis Winston isn’t Drew Brees. Giants win by a field goal 31-28.
Denver Broncos @ Indianapolis Colts (+5.5)
The Broncos are coming off a blowout win over the previously undefeated Packers and the Colts are in shambles after firing offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton. Denvers defense will tee off on Andrew Luck, poor guy. Broncos win 20-3.
Philadelphia Eagles @ Dallas Cowboys (+3)
The Cowboys will get their first win without Tony Romo Sunday. The Eagles just reek of inconsistency and I feel a dud coming on in Dallas. Dallas wins ugly 16-13.
Chicago Bears @ San Diego Chargers (-4)
Phillip Rivers is a great quarterback on a bad football team right now. Jay Cutler and the Bears will take one on the road in San Diego. Bears win 27-20.
